Creative Approaches To Digital Learning

Chalk Drawing

This has been a challenging time teaching Elementary Art in a digital format. Going outside, breathing the air, and drawing with chalk touched my creative soul. I offered this experience as a challenge for my students. So many of them responded with creativity and joy. Stay strong and keep growing.

Have A Seat or Lend A Hand

What Do You See When You  Look At An Object?
What Are You Able To Transform It Into?

Duluth High School Art student, Sean DeRossett, began with a wooden chair and developed it into this interesting sculpture. The Art Teacher, Beau Pezoldt, was the inspiration behind this recycling project.

Calendar Resources

                                 Gather Calendars as Drawing Resources

Look for Calendars that are on Sale or Free. Many organizations and stores give them away throughout the year. When the New Year approaches students may also bring in used calendars as well. Create an organized file for the pictures. Instruct students on how they may use the resource to help in drawing. Create easy categories such as Animals, Sports, Flowers, Patriotic Symbols, People, Faces, and many more. Keep the file in an area that students may easily access.

This works for project ideas as well as Fast Finishers who may choose a picture to draw from while others are still working.

3-D Valentine Boxes

3-Dimensional Valentine Boxes

This is a great way to create a Valentine Box and comply with your math AKS. I used this lesson with 5th graders and they enjoyed the challenge. A variety of forms may be used...this example shows a Tetrahedron or Triangular Pyramid.

Hints For The Elementary School Substitute

                                                         Quick Tricks For The Substitute

Stickers work great for Journal Writing. Have students choose a sticker from one sheet so time is not wasted picking one.

Walking in the hall quietly can be a challenge. Carry your stickers and hand them out when you see a very quiet student doing the right thing. Others will notice quickly. Or say " You may move your conduct clip or magnet when we return to the room."

Many schools collect Box Tops and this can be a     perfect reward for good behavior.

Caught Being Good

Cut small strips of  paper and explain to the students that if they are caught
doing the right thing, following directions, working hard...being good...
they write their name on a slip of paper and it goes in a container. Anything
will work to place the slips into...a baggie, or a plastic cup. Half-way through
the day pull out a number of names and give the students some kind of reward.
This gets other students excited about getting their names added. Pull names at the end of the day as well. SAVE the slips for the teacher so good students may be identified. Students may be chosen more than one time.

Carry a book of short stories or pick out a chapter book in the classroom as an easy way to fill extra minutes. Students always love to be read to.

Vocabulary words or Sight Words work great as a quick Wheel of Fortune game or Hang Man game.
Stress that students must sit quietly and raise hands to participate.

Get Spooky With Halloween Puppets and Masks

Free Halloween Fun Ideas

Embrace the spirit of Halloween and use these fun free props from Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.

This clever box becomes your puppet theatre. Cut out the puppets and display in your class as a writing prompt.

The back of the box displays the names of each character and what they like to say. Tut Kingsly says "Wrap it up! I'll take it."

Write a story or a play.

There are great masks and coloring pages that you can print and cut out.
